My first makeup artist interview...

My first makeup artist interview...

Now On youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qe8lwB5flGs

I had met a wonderful woman named Monica via email. I had contacted her as I sent out copies of my resume, portfolio pictures and a cover letter in order to spread the word that I was a new makeup artist out there ready to work. Monica responded among many others, but none wanted to help quite like she did. She had been a makeup artist herself and experienced the struggle that making the job a success is. She gathered all of the relevant information from me and created a number of website profiles for me such as a profile on http://www.makeuplistings.com/. She began forwarding clients to me who were in search of a makeup artist for their graduations and weddings. I had enquiries and bookings coming in and I was so thankful for her help.

Write a review - http://www.makeupartistlistings.com/faye_michele_smith_vancouver_makeup_artist_interview.html

Later I recieved a request to join up to a www.meetup.com group entitled, Vancouver Makeup Artists and Beauty Lovers, http://www.meetup.com/Vancouver-Makeup-Artists-Beauty-Lovers. I was appointed admin of this group and helped in the organisation of our first meetup which I have previously blogged about, http://fayesmithmakeupartist.blogspot.com/2010/03/faye-smith-makeup-hair-artists-review.html. Little did I know, the first organiser of Vancouver Makeup Artist & Beauty Lovers, Constantin, was actually Monica's husband! They are doing so much to try and promote me as an artist, and I have never known any two strangers be so kind and helpful in all of my life. A truely warm hearted couple that I wish to stay in touch with for the duration of my time as a makeup and hair artist.

Todd Duncan Photography for Justin Robinson's Actor Headshots

Todd Duncan Photography for Justin Robinson's Actor Headshots

www.tdphotography.ca
justin.robinson57@yahoo.ca

I have had my eye on Todd Duncan for a little while and we had been in contact via email here and there for some time. Although we were in contact, I had never gotten the chance to work with him. It just so happened that I got an email from one of Blanche Macdonald's careers advisor, Jennifer Daerendinger, asking me if I was available to fill in for a hair stylist who had cancelled on their photographer last minute. Luckily I was available and as soon as I noticed the photographers name, I was delighted to have been chosen for the position. I was immediately in touch with Todd and he then put me in touch with our client. I had so much fun talking with her on the phone and knew we would have a blast on the shoot.
Unfortunately hours before the shoot was scheduled, I had a call from our client informing me that her parents had been in a car crash in the states and she wouldn't be able to make the shoot. In this type of situation, you can't do anything but be understanding and hope everyone is safe. It was unfortunate and dissapointing that I wouldn't get to work with Todd that day.
Todd had promised me we would work together soon and certainly kept to his word. He asked if I could come along and do some basic hair and makeup for a male Actor's headshots. This actor was named, Justin Robinson.

The hair and makeup requirements for Justin were simple. A basic corrective makeup to cover blemishes, even out skin tone and eliminate shine, combined with a roughed up, wet look, spikey hair style. Very casual and clean.
When Todd began shooting he took an extremely laid back approach to coaching Justin into appropriate poses and facial expressions. This really helped loosen any nerves and tention that being in front of a camera may cause. This, I have learnt, is a very important trait that a photographer should have. The ability to work their models. Whether they are professional, ammature or simply an every day person wanting a one-off photo shoot. This is certainly a quality that Todd has and works to his benefit thus producing fantastic photographs!
It was a pleasure to be on the shoot and I hope to work with Todd again in the near future, and wish success to Justin in the journey he will experience in following his dream to become an actor.

Sirius Photography

Sirius Photography

I met Ed, from Sirius Photography, on http://www.modelmayhem.com/ and began working with him on numerous photo shoots located at the Celic in downtown Vancouver. I have worked with Ed on two occassions so far, doing various head shots work for aspiring actresses. His work is efficient and to the point which I like. I like to work fast and get things done. We are certainly organised.

On my first shoot my model was a beautiful blonde from Russia with a pretty, innocent baby face. Her hair required a simple smoothing and her makeup very neutral. The girl next door look.

My second shoot again, required simple hair and makeup styling. This time we got through two looks. A very natural look for the headshots and them I pumped in a little darker eye shadow for some catalogue style shots.
The photography is very simple and delicate keeping all of the focus on our girls.

After taking a little break while Sirius Photography moved locations, we are now ready to begin shooting again at our new studio. I hope to continue working with Sirius Photography on a regular basis in the near future.

Vasanti Cosmetics Mother's Day Gala

Vasanti Cosmetics Mother's Day Gala

Vasanti Cosmetics is a fantastic, 100% Canadian makeup line, that I have been working for since February 2010. I visit the Vancouver Rexall Drug Store locations and spend 3 to 4 hours demonstrating makeovers on customers. I eduacate them as I go along telling them exactly what I am putting on them, what it does and why I have chosen it for them. I just completed working at both of the locations at the Mother's Day Gala's, where we had food and drinks, music, makeovers and more for our mother and daughter customers to enjoy.

It was tons of fun and I thoroughly enjoy the company of the Rexall employees and my clients. I could spend an entire day there and not get bored. Makeover after makeover.

I hope to continue working with Vasanti Cosmetics and spread the word about this quality, affordable line.

Efashionista is a new listing site for creative lines of work such as makeup artistry, hair artistry, clothing design and more. I am new to the site so no reviews so far but I have worked with 100's of people in my time as a makeup and hair artist so hopefully the feedback will come in soon.

Sandra Steier Photography

www.sandrasteier.com

I was browsing the facebook profile of Blanche Macdonald's careers coordinator, Heather Sosa, when I noticed a posting from a photographer named, Sandra Steier. She was in search of a makeup artist to work with so I emailed her my portfolio and cover letter. Quite some time after, I heard from her asking me to work with her as the makeup and hair artist for a photoshoot she had booked with a newlywed couple for their prenatal photo shoot.
I was delighted to have been asked and hadn't actually done a prenatal photo shoot before I was very excited about the experience. The shoot was very calm and relaxed, keeping the make simple, natural, beautiful and glowing.

I love the outcome of the shoot and am particularly in love with the shot to the right. I love the way Sandra made our mother-to-be look so modern and relaxed. It almost reminds me of a GAP advert or some sort of catalogue shoot.

It was only the following week when I was contacted by Sandra for a second time to ask me to join her on a shoot for a female business woman's corportate headshots. Sandra is such a lovely coworker and friend and I was more than happy to join her on a second shoot.

TV & Film Makeup for Actor, Andy Thompson

TV & Film Makeup for Actor, Andy Thompson

Andy Thompson: " I asked Faye Smith to do me up for an audition I had for the TV show "Sanctuary". I had done makeup "choices" in the past for this same casting director and booked those parts, so I felt I could take similar liberties with this audition, provided that the choices were something I could back up with performance. The part I was auditioning for was a werewolf who was being kept human with some sort of meds and "treatment". The character description suggested that he was a little bit fragile. I met up with Faye the morning of the audition and got my makeup treatment and was quite pleased with the results. She took my skin ton e down a couple of notches and "ghouled out" my eyes. It was pretty creepy! Needless to say, I looked totally unique in the room. The makeup also helped me connect to the character; I took the role to some scary and vulnerable places. The result was a cry-baby, freakish-looking werewolf-man. I don't think I got the part, but from what I can tell, I nailed it, doing everything I wanted to do in the room and more. Therefore it was a success! And the makeup experiment with Faye was a total blast. I'll certainly be doing it again!"

Andy Thompson
Artistic and Managing Director
The Virtual Stage
http://www.thevirtualstage.org/
http://www.andythompson.ca/

I first met Andy back in 2009 when myself and fellow makeup artist, Navjot Sidhu, volunteered to take on the position of makeup and hair artists for a production team participating in the 24 hour Film Race that Andy Thompson was writing and directing. The experience was one of my first tv and film experiences and what a challenging one it was! We met at 10pm where we had a 1hr long production meeting based around a few words that were given to us as "clues" for us to base our story on. By the end of the meeting we had an idea of what we were going to create. The writers began writing while the cast and crew rested. We began hair and makeup a few hours later and worked through the night.

I stayed alert until 7am when I felt myself beginning to crash. I made the bad decision to drink a red bull for some energy. This, I would not advise. It simply made me ill and shakey making a steady hand for makeup touch ups very difficult. Nevertheless we worked until 11am when we finally wrapped. I felt like I had been on a wild night of partying! Exhausted, feeling weak and disorientated, I headed home to take a nap. Though this was the end for me, it was not the end for Andy. Post production was about to begin with only a few hours left to have it complete.

Andy had the DVD to me in no time and we even made top 10 in the 24 hour film race competition. The makeup was tons of fun with retro 60's makeup for the ladies, basic makeup for the men and even special fx burns to impress the judges. Wig applications for hair! What a great experience!

The full length video footage can be viewed on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ik5vl-7wVD4

Well done to everyone involved and it was great to work with Andy again helping him bring this werewolf character to life. He always has fun makeups for me to do. It is not every day that I get asked to make someone looks grosse, ill and posessed.

Children's TV Series, Mr Foxworthy

Children's TV Series, Mr Foxworthy

One of the things I like to do in my spare time is send out emails to companies whom may require my hair and makeup services in order to get my name out in Canada as far and wide spread as possible. For every 100 emails I send, I may get around 5 responses and in those 5 responses, 1 or 2 may be able to help me in my quest to achieve success as a makeup and hair artist. One of those companies was High Deaf Productions - http://www.highdeafproductions.com/

I was contacted by 1st Assistant Director, Matthew Tingey, asking me to join High Deaf Production on the set of children's TV series, Mr Foxworthy - http://www.mrfoxworthy.com/. I was happy to join to the team and my task for the shooting was to do basic hair and makeup on the cute and friendly children who will be acting in the show. It was like working a makeup birthday party. All of the children were so excited to be having their makeup done and be girlie for the day.

The behind the scenes shots have now been released and video footage will soon follow. I look forward to seeing the results of our fun day on set and hope to continue working with both Mr Foxworthy and High Deaf Production in the near future.

Sweet Mystery Musical

Sweet Mystery Musical

http://www.sweetmysterymusical.com/

I saw a posting on Blanche Macdonald employee, Heather Sosa's facebook in search of makeup artists to work on set of the filming of the theatrical dance production entitled, "Sweet Mystery Musical". It sounded like something I hadn't experienced in my career so far and something I would love to be a part of. I called one of the production's choreographers, Heather Laura Gray, to let her know I would like to volunteer my time. I sent her my resume and portfolio pictures and it wasn't long before she responded to me let me know the good news, that they would like to take me on board for the production. There was no key makeup artist assigned so I volunteered myself to lead the team of artists through the production. I was sent the script and immediately began my character breakdown and facecharts to help determine the looks of the characters. I took them along with me to the production meeting where we would further discuss the characters and how they should be portrayed visually.

It wasnt long before we were on set at The Clutch in Vancouver East Cultural Centre on our first day of filming, Monday March 22nd 2010. I had a team of 4 artists including myself, Christa Monroe, Mandy Imeson and Kristina Wood. Sadly, Kristina was unwell so after helping us get the cast ready to start shooting, she took off early to get some rest. Unfortunately she was unable to join us for the rest of the production. Although day number one, as always, was a big set back to us in terms of the production timing, day 2 was organised, efficient and ran smoothly from beginning to end. All scenes got shot with full coverage and the dancers were understandabley exhausted by the end of the two days.

Our cast and crew ran amazingly together and we were excited to be informed by executive producer, Bernard Eberlein, that he would like to take our makeup team on for the upcoming live performance on Tuesday April 20th. Time zipped by and before we knew it the remaining makeup team were on their way to James Cohan Theatre located in the Shadbolt Theatre in Burnaby. We had all day to get the cast ready as we held the dress rehearsal back to back with the live performance. The day couldn't have run smoother. The performance was a great success with high audience attendance and high hopes for Sweet Mystery Musical's future. We hope the production continues on with great success and it will always be a pleasure to be back stage working on our cast as a makeup and hair artist.

Key Makeup Artist for the Jacqueline Conoir 2010 Fall Fashion Show

Key Makeup Artist for the Jacqueline Conoir 2010 Fall Fashion Show

http://www.jcstudio.ca/

In 2009 I was delighted to be the key makeup artist for two of the years Jacqueline Conoir Fashion Shows. I was contacted by designer, Rozemerie Cuevas for a third time requesting my talent for the Jacqueline Conoir 2010 Fall Fashion Show. I was delighted to have been asked again and began organising my team of artists right away.

It wasn't long before I had a fantastic team selected and the day was ready to begin. Arriving in plenty of time I was able to do a test run on the makeup to be sure we had the perfect look before guideing my team through the design. We had 18 gorgeous models to makeup and a team of 6 artists. The look was simple and stunning; flawless skin, peach blush, grey smokey shadow, huge lashes and a glossy lip. In only a few hours I was ready to pack my set bag and get back stage ready to race on touch ups before and during the show.

With an amazingly talented and organised team behind the scenes, the show ran smoothly and is my favourite show as of yet. They just keep getting better and better and I look forward to the next one.

Special thanks to my team of artists:

My First Boudoir Shoot with Nicole Brown

My First Boudoir Shoot

After working with photographer, Nicole Brown on a shoot over on Victoria Island, I was delighted to hear from her again, this time to inform me that she was coming to Vancouver to do a shoot. A boudoir shoot. I had done a similar style shoot last year on one of the first few photo shoots in my career. I of course was more than happy to come along to River Rock Casino in Richmond to make the girls up to look simply sexy and seducing. Nicole's choice of models was fantastic! Three completely different girls, all looking so innocent and angelic ready to be transformed into sex kittens sprawling around the hotel room.

Nicole had another photographer come along with her from Orange Frog Studios. It wasnt long before all 6 of us were giggling and smiling as our beautiful models had fun posing in front of the cameras. Words of encouragement were flying from everyones mouths resulting in wilder and more extravagant poses. The shoot produced such a variety of shots and Nicole, as always, was sure to take some great makeup shots for me. It is great working with such a considerate photographer.

MOONJUICE Presents INSPIRE 2010 - A Dinner Benefiting the YWCA Charity

MOONJUICE Presents INSPIRE 2010 - A Dinner Benefiting the YWCA Charity

Nav Sidhu is a wonderful makeup artist who was in my training class at Blanche Macdonald. We both completed the masters makeup artist diploma in August 2009 and are now working in the wonderful world of makeup. I would speak to Nav on occasion and knew that she was recovering from injury and taking time off work for a little while. It wasnt long before I heard from her again. She was back in action and well on the way to recover. She was contacting me to ask if I would like to help her do makeup for a charity event that her friends had organised.

The charity was the YWCA, http://www.ywcavan.org/index.php and the event being organised by the workers of a clothing company named MOONJUICE. Prior to the event I asked Manay Chima, the main organiser of the event, to give me some information so I knew who I was supporting and why.

Manay Chima - "I own a clothing company called MoonJuice. We had a charity fundraiser for the YWCA in 2008 where we had almost 200 guests arrive at the Starlight Casino to raise funds to help fund the amazing programs the Y has to help single moms. We raised over $4000 in one night! We went into business wanting to help less fortunate women. This year due to "life" getting in the way...we put a hold on buying new stock and pushing MoonJuice but we wanted to still start the year by helping the "Y" women. What we are doing with this event is selling tickets for $40 which covers a buffet meal and "makeovers" for 5 abused/single moms who are unable to ahead with their careers due to financial and emotional troubles. This is where your support really means a lot. The YWCA does an amazing job helping the women on the inside while we wanted to make these women feel beautiful on the outside"

I of course jumped at the opportunity to work this wonderful event and before I knew it I was back stage of the Starlight Casino in New Westminster doing makeup on 3 lovely ladies, dancing and having fun with them all at the same time.

The lucky ladies had the opportunity to be pampered all evening receiving new hair cuts, colours and styles, beautiful makeovers, a new wardrobe and a big stage reveal to end the evening. What more could a lady ask for. What a transformation and beautiful end result. A big congratulations to all volunteers involved in this event.

Faye Smith Makeup & Hair Artist for La Novia Bridal - GRAND OPENING APRIL 9th 2010 @ 9pm

I am proud to announce the grand opening of La Novia Bridal, a bridal company I have been working with for a few months now. All of the La Novia staff have recently taken part in a number of professional hair training sessions and will have completed training on April 30th 2010 when the staff will have their final testing. We have learnt new hair styling skills such as classic fingers waves, wet sets and roller sets. The training by Jenine from Hellcat Beauty has been absolutely fantastic and I have enjoyed every moment of it. I am looking forward to our grand opening this Friday 9th April and have high hopes for La Novia's future success.

Faye Smith Makeup & Hair Artist's Review on Vancouver Makeup Artists Beauty Lovers FIRST MEETUP

Faye Smith Makeup & Hair Artist's Review on the first meetup of Vancouver Makeup Artists Beauty Lovers

Vancouver Makeup Artists and Beauty Lovers is a group that has recently been opened and organised using www.meetup.com. Myself and a wonderful and kind man named Constantin Rotariu organised the event in order to bring makeup artists in Vancouver together to exchange networking tips, advise and more. The group can be found at http://www.meetup.com/Vancouver-Makeup-Artists-Beauty-Lovers/ and I would advise any student, post grad or experienced makeup artist to join the group and begin attending our meetings. Even if you havn't gone into a makeup course yet but are perhaps thinking about it, this group will be amazingly useful and beneficial to you.

Our first meetup was held last night, 30th March 2010, at a stunning restaurant and lounge named Townhouse on Alberni and Burrard in Downtown Vancouver. The meetup location may be visually appealing but the music sound levels were what I would consider to be too high for a serious meeting to take place. We will be searching for a new, more suitable location for our second meeting. For our first meetup we were expecting around 20 people to show. Unfortunately only 6 showed up, 2 of which were makeup artists. This lead me to the decision to hold off my speech until the next meeting where hopefully we will have a whole lot more artists in the audience to listen to the words of advise I have to give.

To those of you who missed this first meetup, it is a huge shame. We were lucky enough to have Sandi Lesueur from Makeup Artist Magazine, http://www.makeupmag.com/, come along to give out free copies of the latest issue, enter us into a prize draw to win a weekend ticket to the IMATS and give us some useful contacts and words of advise. Myself and fellow makeup artist, Dina Koop were the only artists there to benefit from Sandi's visit.

The meetup was certainly worth while and appreciated. I will be making a facebook group for the next event to spread awareness so look out for it!

Faye Smith Makeup & Hair Artist Featured in this Seasons Issue of Fashionberry Online Magazine!

http://www.fashionberry.com/issue-011/view-issue.html

I am honoured to be the makeup and hair artist featured in this seasons issue of Fashionberry Online Magazine. I have been joined up to fashionberry for a few months now. The site allows creative minds to blog to one another about makeup and hair tips, event postings and more. I was asked to be the feature makeup and hair artist and began writing a short blog on myself and selecting a small amount of pictures to be used. The designers of the site have done a fantastic job and I am very pleased with the outcome. It is a shame the magazine does not go to print but I have high hopes for fashionberry's future.

Faye Smith Makeup & Hair Artist for Costume Designer, NINA HINTON!

Faye Smith Makeup & Hair Artist for Costume Designer, NINA HINTON!!!
With photographer, Nicole Brown and models, Ingrid, Sarah and Nina.

http://www.ninahirlaenderhinton.com/

I met Nina by complete coincidence when I was researching one day, sending emails to people who may be able help me on my quest to make a success of my career as a makeup and hair artist. I was contacting Nina in relation to Theatre Teriffic and it just so happened that she was planning a photo shoot for her own costume/clothing line. I had sent her some shots of my work and she felt it were fait that I had contacted her and we were soon meeting for tea and a chat. In no time we had planned our day trip to Victoria Island and were ready to shoot all of her amazing costumes.

Nina gave me complete freedom when it came to the makeup and hair designs and told me to go as crazy as I could. So I didnt hold back. Having three completely different models allowed me to create a range of looks of look from cute and innocent to insane, lunatic to wild, russian dancer. The day was really fun and everybody involved were an absolute pleasure to work with and the outcome of the shoot is something for us all to be very proud of. I would be delighted to work with any of these wonderful ladies again and am actually hoping to work with photographer, Nicole Brown again this weekend on a photo shoot based in Vancouver this time.

I look forward to seeing Nina's choice of images to use on her website to promote her amazing costumes. When coming to pick the images I will be using I simply could not choose. To see more of the images. Please refer to my facebook (fmsmith@live.co.uk).

Faye Smith Makeup & Hair Artist with Painted Alley Photography and Actress, Gigi

Faye Smith Makeup & Hair Artist with Painted Alley Photography and Actress, Gigi

I worked with Painted Alley in the summer of 2009 and what an experience it was. I love to be put in unusual or challenging situations and this shoot was certainly challenging. We were on location from start to finish on a baking hot summers day. The only area I could do hair and makeup was in the back of a car. It was cramped and there was nowhere to put my kit so I was pretty much working out of a box and in my lap. We had no air conditioning on so the heat in the car, even with the doors open, was intense. Both I and the model were working up some shine on our faces. It was certainly a situation I had not come across before but I managed to fight the shine and get the hair and makeup done successfully and beautifully. There were even people passing by whistling at my gorgeous models as they got the final touches done to their hair.

I was delighted to have been called back on a second photo shoot with Painted Alley. This time we were working in a professional studio with it's own secluded makeup and hair area so I had all the space I could wish for, plug points and mirroRs all around me. Having such a stunning model to work on, the makeup and hair was quick and easy to apply and what stunning pictures we created. I hope to work with Painted Alley again in the near future!

Faye Smith Makeup & Hair Artist for UNIQUE photo shoot with Meg Hawkins photography and models Misti and Helen

Faye Smith Makeup & Hair Artist for UNIQUE photo shoot with Meg Hawkins photography and models Misti and Helen

After having spent over a year in Vancouver, BC, Canada, it was finally time for me to return home in November 2009. I had been doing previous research and had been in touch with some photographers I could work with when I returned and I was exciting to go on my first UK photo shoot. The shoot was with photographer, Meg Hawkins and models Misti (seen to the right) and Helen (seen below). The concept was so unique and required a number of different hair and makeup looks. One of which was the "half and half", representing a man torn between his male and female side. We were hoping that the uniqueness of the concept and talent involved would achieve a spread in my favourite magazine, NOI.SE Magazine. Sadly we did not achieve our goal but nevertheless, we achieved some very unique portfolio pictures that tell a story.

This photo shoot was fun from start to finish and it was so unusual to hear a completely different accent to what I had been hearing for the past year. The day was long and we covered multiple outfits, makeup and hair styles, ideas, expressions and more in order to produce as many pictures as possible and tell the story as vivid as could be told through images. It is sad that our vision was not seen in the same way as the editors of NOI.SE Magazine but we are happy to finally be able to release the pictures for our audience to see. I hope you like our work. Comments welcome.

La Novia Bridal is a bridal company I have been a part of as a hair and makeup artist for over a month now and have already held two wedding consultations. One of which included airbrushed makeup. The company is growing fast and I am very proud to be a part of it. Lorilee Keller is the founder and owner and is doing a great job of revamping our salon and creating new and improved ideas for the business, it's clients and it's employees. Having a love for the old fashioned wet set hair styles, Lorilee came up with the idea to take the salon back to the 40's offering a unique service where ladies can come in and have their hair set the old fashioned way. The salon is being decorated accordingly and the staff are being trained by Jenine Lehfeld from Hellcat Beauty.

I am luckily enough to already be acquainted with Jenine. I volunteered to work under the name of her company as a makeup and hair artist for the LOVESTRUCK Bridal Fashion Show in 2009. She impressed me then and she impressed me today. It is no wonder that Jenine recently joined the team of Blanche Macdonald teachers as she is a fantastic conductor and taught the La Novia team well today. Having demonstrations and the chance to practise on both manicans and real people using three different methods to create the classic fingerwaves, we are well on our way to creating a well skilled team of artists. I look forward to my second training session next week where we will learn various methods of creating curls.
